EnGarde Secure Community 3.0.18 Release Notes

Guardian Digital is happy to announce the release of EnGarde Secure Community 3.0.18 (Version 3.0, Release 18). This release includes many updated packages and bug fixes, some feature enhancements to Guardian Digital WebTool and the SELinux policy, and a few new features.

In distribution since 2001, EnGarde Secure Community was one of the very first security platforms developed entirely from open source, and has been engineered from the ground-up to provide users and organizations with complete, secure Web functionality, DNS, database, e-mail security and even e-commerce.

The following reported bugs from bugs.engardelinux.org are fixed in this release:

  • #0000114 SASL Support in Postfix
  • #0000168 After the last update with the WebTool, PHP5 does not ...
  • #0000182 Add index.php setup to Squirrelmail documentation
  • #0000183 DHCPD package doesn't create a needed pathway on install
  • #0000184 Remove the 'resize_inode' feature from created filesystems
  • #0000185 CD-ROM does not eject after installation

Several other bugs are fixed in this release as well.

New features include:

  • The Guardian Digital Health Center. This new WebTool module allows you to monitor system temperature, fans, and hard drive S.M.A.R.T. data so you can proactively notice hardware failures. This module will be greatly expanded upon in the months ahead.
  • Two new tools, fwknop and psad, featured in the the new "Linux Firewalls" book by Michael Rash and No Starch Press, have been included in this release. Over the coming weeks, members of the EnGarde Secure Linux Team will be posting HOWTO's on LinuxSecurity.com outlining how use these tools on EnGarde. If you're interested in firewalls, keep an eye out!
  • A new stress testing suite, contained in the new stress-kernel package, has been included in this release. This is roughly the same testing suite that our kernels go through before each release but it's also a good way to "burn in" new hardware.
  • Several new packages such as bc (1.06), cyrus-sasl (2.1.22), drbd (8.2.1), dsniff (2.3), eventlog (0.2.5), fwknop (1.8.2), libnids (1.22), perl-EnGarde-HealthCenter (0.90), perl-Text-Context (3.6), perl-Text-Context-EitherSide (1.3), perl-UNIVERSAL-require (0.11), psad (2.1), quota (3.15), sdparm (1.02), stress-kernel (3.0), and swish-e (2.4.5).
  • The latest stable versions of MySQL (5.0.45), asterisk (1.4.14), bacula (2.2.6), cpio (2.9), curl (7.17.1), dhcpd (3.1.0), dovecot (1.0.7), einstall (3.18), engarde-policy (3.18), gdb (6.7.1), kernel (2.6.23), krb5 (1.6.3), kvm (52), libol (0.3.18), libpng (1.2.23), lm_sensors (2.10.5), mpg123 (0.68), openswan (2.4.10), samba (3.0.27a), smartmontools (5.37), sudo (1.6.9p8), syslog-ng (2.0.5), webtool (3.18), xl2tpd (1.1.12), zaptel (1.4.6).

All new users downloading EnGarde Secure Linux for the first time or users who use the LiveCD environment should download this release.

Users who are currently using EnGarde Secure Linux do not need to download this release -- they can update their machines via the Guardian Digital Secure Network WebTool module.
